Bangkok residents have had elected district councillors since 1985. City councillors are responsible for legislature, budget approvals and inspecting the work of BMA officials and the Bangkok governor. City councillors would work at district level, mostly assisting community development and keeping checks on the district office's works and budget spending. Before the coup in 2014, there were 351 district councillors for Bangkok, or seven for each district. Each district councillor gets a salary of 11,990 baht per month, and the chairman 16,180 baht a month.
